Kas was originally bought as a pet and I had no thoughts of entering the show ring. At Crufts 1989 I visited the Basenji benches with some puppy photos, and discovered his litter brother Skarab had been top puppy in the breed for 1988. Shortly afterwards at the age of 15 months, Kas was persuaded into the ring for the first time, handled by his breeder Krys Marszalek. I refused to "prance around like a fairy" and watched from the sidelines. In the summer of 1989 I watched and practised at a few small local shows, determined to learn enough (whatever "enough" is) before making a potential idiot of myself in front of those already established in the breed. I must have felt confident by August, as we can both be seen in the video of the Basenji Club of Great Britain Golden Jubilee show (judge Bob Curtis of Australia). Kas was third in the post graduate dog class (and what a mess I made of stacking him in the winning line-up!). My handling must have improved by the West of England Ladies Kennel Society (WELKS) championship show the following April, as Kas won the Reserve CC under judge Elspet Ford. In 1992 he won the CC at Manchester under Jayne Wilson Stringer. Although he had a late start, Kas outstayed many of his contemporaries in the ring and finally retired at Crufts 1999 aged 11, where he was second in a large veteran dog class. In his veteran career he had many wins, including Crufts 1997 and the Hound/Toy heat of the Veteran Stakes at Windsor championship show 1995, finishing runner-up to the overall winner on the last day.

| Kas sired two litters. He was
mated to Chaanrose Orange Sauce to produce Ch. Chaanrose Partner in Crime at
Zordia, Top Basenji 1998 (6
CCs), and the following year to his half-sister Khufu Starkist Semjase, from
which litter I kept a bitch, Bushwacker Sioux City Sue (1 CC, 4 RCCs).
His son,
Bushwacker Rawhide, lives in The
Netherlands. Kas was Our Dogs/Pedigree Chum Top Sire 1997. His grandchildren include Ch. Zordia's James Bond (8 CCs), Am. Ch. Bushwacker Diamond Lil by Horsleys, Bushwacker Nevada Smith by Horsleys, Bushwacker Sirnotar by Horsleys, Bushwacker Hurricane Hattie, Bushwacker Dixie Lee, and in Finland, Chaanrose Parting Shot. |
